In 1987 I wrote an essay for English class as a result of a simple assignment: write something you'll read again in ten or twenty years. Write about who you are, what you like about yourself, and what you don't. Write down your dreams... and when you read it again, smile whether the dreams are now reality, or still far fetched dreams that make you happy. And your friends, don't just list them, but take a moment and think about what qualities your friends have that you like, and don't like... and why they're your friends. Not only did I write the essay, but I kept it, and here's what I found: " I plan on teaming up with my friend Tiffany when I'm 25. She wants to open a hospital for kids and be one of the doctors, and I want to pay for and help design the building. When I'm 30, and Tiffany's 29, I want the hospital to be doing good, and I want to be either writing children's books or tutoring children in the hospital. I know I'm a fantasizer and this will never come true, but I'm allowed my fantasies. My dream, that I know can come trues with work, is to be an English tutor/teacher or write children's books, but whatever I do will be for kids. Special people in my life right now are my parents... and Tiffany Brissette- the girl I want to open the hospital with. ... Tiffany's special because we share a similar dream and she is fun to be with no matter what is going on." Well, the hospital, as you can imagine, hasn't happened, and I turn 25 far sooner than I like to admit, so I don't think that dream will come in on schedule - but I am writing books and several people have recently encouraged me to get a masters and teach college level English for a steady paycheck... so maybe dreams are just goals with no deadline.
