About My Book:

What do you think would happen if you suddenly introduced a bachelor into a female-dominated organization? An invitation like that could easily cause some truly amusing stories. Well, it happened to me and that's the foundation on which I built this book, On My Honor: Surviving as a Male Brownie Girl Scout Leader.

Children are very special to me and I couldn't imagine what the world would be like without them, but a major controversy arises when a man, especially an unmarried man, chooses to work with them. With such an alarming number of crimes against children appearing in the headlines every day, it takes a great amount of courage for a single guy to consider putting himself in a position where he would be working around them.

Inspite of some former setbacks and much criticism, I have been surprisingly successful in battling the gender barrier as both a Brownie troop leader and a Brownie consultant for all the troops in our Service Unit region.

My experiences with the girls as well as the adults have been absolutely enlightening, unpredictable, and sometimes embarrassing. Anyone who has ever worked with young children knows exactly what I'm talking about and will appreciate the stories I have to share.

My love for the children often extends beyond the confines of the Brownie troop as I have taken several underprivileged Scouts under my wing and into my home, fostered them, tutored them, guided them, and hopefully had a positive influence on their lives.

Working with the troop has offered me a way to deal with being childless as I attempt to put myself in the position where I can some day adopt a child of my own. It also answers a lot of questions I have about becoming a parent and is helping me prepare for that day if it ever comes.

Society still has a long way to go before people more readily accept confirmed bachelors as able-bodied caregivers and adoptive parents but I have made some major strides in my life as I struggle daily to earn the trust of people whose children find themselves in my care.

This book proves that barriers can be broken and stereotypes can be overcome. It also shows how important childhood is to children as well as to the adults who cultivate their tender lives.

Lowell R. Kammer:

Although I am a confirmed bachelor, 1998 marks my tenth year as a Brownie Girl Scout Leader with Troop 123 in Sanborn, New York. Along with being a leader, I teach piano lessons and volunteer as an elementary school pianist. I accompany the fourth and fifth grade choruses as well as perform for school musicals.

As a composer, I enjoy writing music for children and young adults and recently composed the score for a full-length musical by Lee Sheldon based on Roald Dahl's book, "Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator." The show made its premiere performance in 1994 at Errick Road Elementary School where I have been a pianist for four years.

When I'm not busy making music or working with children, I am employed by the Nioga Library System in upstate New York and work in the interlibrary loan department where I serve our system's 23 member libraries.
